What is ETIAS Italy?

ETIAS Italy stands for European Travel and Information Authorisation System. It is an electronic scheme, similar to the US ESTA system, that will keep track of people travelling in and out of the Schengen zone. The purpose of the initiative is to increase efficiency and security for visitors to, and residents of, the destination countries. Italy ETIAS aims to streamline the travel process into the EU Schengen zone, making more simple, time-efficient and safe.
ETIAS authorisation is required of all citizens of countries, like the UK, which do not belong to the EU but do have visa-free status when visiting Schengen zone countries. Italy is included in the Schengen zone and therefore will require everyone travelling to Italy from UK to have ETIAS approval before they can enter the country.

Documents required for UK citizens travelling to Italy

As the UK is on a list of countries not requiring a visa to enter the Schengen zone, its citizens will require ETIAS Italy to travel to Italy. UK citizens wishing to travel to Italy will not be required to visit an embassy or attend an in-person meeting to do so – ETIAS authorisation, which can be achieved fully electronically, will be sufficient for travel. The only document required for the ETIAS application is a valid biometric passport with an expiry date no less than three months from the date of arrival in Italy. If the information or documentation submitted during the application process is regarded as inadequate, the applicant may be asked to attend an interview. In some rare cases, the application may be denied.

How does ETIAS Italy Work?

The ETIAS application will be fully electronic, and once it is submitted, the applicant will very quickly receive a response of either approval or rejection. Most applications will be approved within minutes, but on rare occasions an application could be rejected, more information may be requested, or the applicant may be asked to attend an interview. If the ETIAS Visa waiver for Italy is granted, the eligible traveller will be able to visit an unlimited number of countries within the Schengen zone for 90 days in a 180-day period. The Schengen zone is made up of full current EU Schengen countries, European Free Trade Association (EFTA) members, European Microstates with Open Borders, and future Schengen members. Please note ETIAS Italy cannot be transferred from one passport to another. If a new passport is issued or if the registered passport expires, a new application for ETIAS must be submitted.

Reduced application time for ETIAS italy

The ETIAS Italy application is designed to be completed within a short window of time – the maximum time allowed is 20 minutes. The application will require the applicant to give certain information such as full name, residency address and date of birth. It will also ask for some additional information such as travel history and whether the applicant has a criminal record. The information given will be cross-checked with existing databases. If any information appears to be inauthentic or suspicious, an interview may be appointed.

Ensure the security of European borders

The data and documentation submitted by the applicant will be stored and may be used in future, primarily to protect the safety and security of the countries being visited.

Decrease terrorism and crime

Many European countries, including the France and Spain, have been victims of security threats and terrorism in recent decades. It has become evident that border control needs to be more tightly regulated, which is what initiated the idea of ETIASItaly . All information collected through the application process for ETIAS will be checked against existing databases such as Interpol, Europol and SIS, and in doing so will aim to bolster the security of countries within the Schengen zone.

Systematisation of visa liberalisation

The ETIAS system will be a much more advanced and sophisticated system than the one currently in place for visa-exempt countries such as the UK. It will simplify the process of travelling to the Schengen region, and improve the security of the countries within it, by checking every visitor against existing databases and pre-screen the risk that they may present. ETIAS Italy will be mandatory for all citizens of the UK and other non-EU countries with visa exemption.

Fight against illegal immigration

A difficult dilemma for most countries worldwide is that of illegal immigration, which ETIAS Italy will help to curb by more efficiently controlling the borders and tracking visitors. Illegal immigration is unfortunately the cause of many unwanted political, social, economic, and cultural issues, such as:

  • Wage disparities
  • Over-population issues
  • Increased disease transmission
  • Educational and health problems
  • Exploiting immigrants for low wages
  • Salary disparities

Who will need ETIAS Italy to travel to Italy?

Anyone who is a citizen of a non-EU country who holds visa-free status with the EU will be required to submit an ETIAS application before travelling to Italy or any other country in the Schengen zone. As the UK is included in this list since leaving the EU after Brexit, it will be mandatory for UK citizens to have ETIAS approval before travelling to Italy.
